I have a nine year old Siberian Husky. I've had her since she was about four weeks old and she is great. The only problem is that she gets so much attention when I am out and about walking her in public. I've sure a lot of people get that with their dogs. I know my dog is no more or less special than anyone else's dog. But I just don't know how people are always up for a dog chat with anyone, anytime, anywhere.

Today my friend Jeremy was here and we decided to take the dog for a walk since he is visiting from out of town where the Pacific Ocean is not really a common sight. We walked with my dog to the pier and encountered a few interesting dog lovers along the way. First one was this man on the pier. We walked towards his direction and I could tell that he was staring at my dog Rudy. I was just going on with Jeremy about something else as we walk by and the onlooker blurts out the following. "A Husky!" he said. "Yep." I quickly responded. He said again, "I've got two of them!" Okay, I am happy for him. What does he expect me to respond to that. I muttered under my breath in Jeremy's direction, "Congratulations...?" I am sure he felt some kind of camaraderie with me since our dogs happen to be of the same breed. But sometimes I just don't feel like striking up a conversation about dogs with a stranger.

We walked to the end of the pier and hung out for a bit to enjoy the nice summer day and turned around to start heading back. Not too far back down the pier a woman in a walking suit turns and smiles as she walked past us and said excitedly, "Is that an Akita!?!?!?" Even though I was in the middle of a sentence with Jeremy but I politely replied to her, "No, she's actually a Siberian husky." "REALLY!?!?" she exclaimed. Again I felt like she wanted to get into another dog conversation but we just kept walking. I've had plenty of these conversations in the past and I know how they all go. People want to know how to tell them apart and how great they think the breed is thinks Huskies are also great. Again, I just can't get into it. I told Jeremy, "I should have said 'Yes' to her." She would have been content and I wouldn't have to feel bad for walking away.

Not far down the pier from the last lady, an older man walked toward us from a distance and I could tell he was looking at Rudy and had something to share with me. He looked to be maybe in his 70's or 80's and had a ginormous grin as he approached. As he got near, he blurted out this phrase in his some what raspy and mildly quivering old man voice.

"Is that a half Border Collie and half Elk Hound mix!?!?"

I thought at first, 'WTF?'. But without hesitation, I responded, "Yes she is." He was ever so excited to hear that. "REALLY!?" We kept walking. I didn't have it in me to tell him the truth. I also didn't have it in me to rap to him about Siberian Huskies and how they are a Nordic breed and loves the cold weather. The conversation always somehow end up on the topic of whether or not I shave her for the summer and I will have to explain how her coat insulates her to keep her cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Also, what the hell is an Elk Hound? How can this man know what an Elk Hound is but not know what a husky looks like. I am sure he was wondering when he saw her at a distance and began wondering about her breed long before he asked the question. How excited he must have been to think that his wild stab in the dark was right on the money. I bet he went home to his wife that afternoon and gloated to her about his still impeccable ability to read dog breeds.

I love my dog. I also love all dogs in general and I am glad that there are so many dog lovers in the world who take care of them. But I am not always in the mood to strike up a dog conversation. I just want to get this out there so if I run into your on the street and I don't stop to BS with you about the difference between a malamute and a husky, don't be too offended. In the meantime, I need to look up and see what the hell an Elk Hound is......

Burton Snowboards acquires Channel Islands Surfboards

Today my friend Helaine forwarded me and Email that announces the acquisition of the world renown Channel Islands Surfboards created by Al Merrick in 1969 to the snowboard staple Burton Snowboards. At the surface of this deal it may seem to make sense to most people. The biggest surfboard company joins forces with the biggest snowboard company. Both sports share a similar audience and subculture that once was underground and irreverent.

Once you look deeper into this deal, it was clear to me that the surfers are getting the short end of the deal. Think about each sport and its origins, surfing has a glorious and romantic start in Polynesia and developed through the past 100 years with a deeply layered legacy world-wide. Snowboarding on the other hand was a spin off sport that merged skateboarding and skiing. It has exponentially grown since its start in the late 70's and early 80's. The shallow learning curve and accessibility of snow and slopes made snowboarding as mainstream the sport they evolved from. Surfing on the other hand is not as easily picked up and requires some real dedication for a beginning enthusiast to become competent.

Surfing is also much more multifaceted as a sport than its solid-state counter part. Waves are ever-changing and unpredictable whereas groomed snow on a ski resort is just a passive opposition for metal edges of a snowboard. I don't want to sounds like a snob but I just don't think the snowboard culture is as deep and rich as the surfing culture. For most surfers, snowboarding is what you do in the winter time if the swells are small. Ask any surfer to choose between surfing the best waves in the world versus riding the best snow, I would imagine most would choose the liquid version of the board sport.

These 2 companies are as big as they come in their respective sports. Can they really benefit from each other? I doubt it. Nearly all surfers already snowboard so there is nothing for Channel Islands to gain by trying to sell their customer base on a new sport. I suspect what Burton will do is going to try and sell the romance of riding a wave to their snowboarding masses. Most of them will never pick it up but in the meantime there will be more people in the water for us to dodge around. Al, I hope it was worth it to you.

I just saw the perfect dessert for the burger lover. Well, it will not taste much like a burger but it sounds awesome. Here are the dessert equivalents of what makes this sweet burger:

Buns = Donut without the hole

Meat Patty = A brownie cut with a cookie cutter

Cheese = Artificially colored frosting

Tomatoes = Sliced strawberries

Pickles = Sliced seedless grapes

Fries = Wedges of mangoes

Over the years as a graphic designer and web developer, I have heard many people pronounce the file format GIF as 'jif'. It makes my skin crawl and spine tingle when I hear that but apparently other people are not so bothered by it. I have been thinking about this all morning and have not been able to find another word that starts with the letter 'G' that isn't followed by an 'E' that is pronounced like a 'J'. If that last sentence wasn't thoroughly and completely confusing, I don't know what is. But my point is that GIF is pronounced as GGGGGGif as in GIFT!!! Stop screwing it up!

Universal Music trying to find Elliott Smith

According to an article on harpmagazine.com, the bean counters are Universal Music, who owns Elliotts Smith's former label, have been trying to find him. They did not know that the Elliott had died nearly 2 and a half years ago. They wanted to pay him the royalties he and Neil Gust earned from the cover Jimmy Eat World did of their song 'Not Half Right'. Alex Steininger was the person they contacted and he had to break the bad news to them. Their response was simply that it wasn't their job to know whether or now someone was alive or dead. They just wanted to give them their money. This reminds me of that scene in Office Space where Milton continues to be paid his salary years after he was officially fired. It's not really the same thing but it just shows you how little people care. They just want to get in and out of their jobs which they hate without drawing too much attention to themselves so they don't get fired.

I had lunch today with Marlene and her coworker/friend Brenda at a local Mexican restaurant called Ruby's today. As we were sitting around just chatting about nothing, this guy gets up from his table and walks by with a truckers hat pulled pretty far down below his brow along with a hot young blonde. They leave the restaurant and get into a new BMW 750i that's parked outside. I look over to Marlene and said, "That was Dennis Quaid." It's not too unusual to see celebrities walking around downtown Santa Barbara, but a little local Mexican restaurant in Ventura? Maybe that's a sign that we are on the up and up.....

Google rejects a more democratic shareholder voting system

The three head honchos of Google, Schmidt, Page and Brin hold a special class of stock in their company. Although they've sold a large sum of their shares and diluted even more by cashing out to the open market, they still hold over two thirds of the voting power. One of their shareholders who own over 4700 shares of their class A common stock propose that they remove the voting restrictions but they would shot down. What a way for these three guys to have their cake and eat it too. Not only was it enough that they cashed out billions worth of cash last year, they still want the ability to over rule their thousands of shareholders whenever they wish. People are sheep.

Failed suicide results in hefty fines

This story really sucks. A man tried to commit suicide by jumping in
front of a train and fails. You would think that is a pretty safe bet
that you will not survive. On the same level as a shotgun in the mouth
or falling from a skyscraper. But he did. Now the Munich authorities
(Where this took place) wants him to pay for the train repairs (he fell
through the window of the train into the conductor's lap) and the lost
wages from the conductor being too freaked out. Why do they even bother?
If he didn't have a good enough reason to kill himself before, they just
gave him another. Good luck collecting on that fine, Dieter.

Ventura in CommandN

There is this online video tech podcast called CommandN. (For those in
the know, that is the Macintosh command for creating a new file.) I've
been watching it off and on for awhile. Just yesterday I decided to
checkout their latest episode and I was surprise to hear the host
mention my town Ventura, CA. It was related to a new Website called
www.turnhere.com. It has little short films people make and submit from and about
different locations in the U.S.. Don't know why CommandN use Ventura as
an example since they are based out of Toronto, Canada and Ventura only
has one little 4 minute video on the site. Nontheless it was pretty

IT Conversations Podcast Introductions

I have been listening to podcasts for awhile and one of the podcasts I
listen to are the IT Conversations podcasts. The content is great and I
appreciate the work they do. But I do have a couple of pet peeves about
these podcasts. Actually only one of the can really be called a pet
peeve, the other is starting to piss me off.

First of all, what the hell is the job title for Doug Kaye? Executive
Producer? Executive Director? CEO? Make up your fucking mind Doug! Who
cares what your title is but please make up your mind and stick with it.
Call your self the 'Fucking Sultan of Annoying Podcaster' and be done
with it.

The other thing I wanted to vent about these podcasts are the damn
introductions. Jeeze louis! They are almost 2 minutes long on each ends.
It just goes on and on and on. If you are going to advertise shit with
your podcast, please choose one advertiser for each post. I can't stand
listening to him push his bandwidth provider and soliciting new ones for 4 minutes in every post. Thats 20% of the whole thing!! (for a 20 minute podcast)

Anyways, I know I don't have to listen to it and I might not be for
long. For now I will try not to blow my hood when it happens.

This little guy haas been wreaking havoc on our front lawn for awhile. At first I thought our neighbor was piling dirty on our front lawn which was quite odd. As it continued to happen for a few weeks I began to wonder what it really could be. Ended up we had a gopher making itself at home in the front lawn. So strange that this guy decided that our front lawn was the best place for it to call home. We bought one of these sonic sticks that basically annoys them away by making a beeping sound every 30 seconds. Before we had the chance to use it, marlene saw this guy having a showdown in broad daylight with a neighborhood cat. She raced out to scare the cat away and this guy just dropped to the floor. He was still breathing when we got to him and alive in this picture but unfortunately he didn't survive and died at the animal hospital.

Amazone awarded 3 new patents

This is out of control. Amazon is just a website that sells crap. OK,
mostly crap. I thought awhile back that their 1-click shopping patent
was pretty ludicrous but now they've taken it another step further.
Apparently the USPTO has awarded them 3 more patents on their business
processes. First one is related to the formulation of purchase circles
on their Website. It is basically a recommendations engine. Next they
got the patent for their method of delivering search results based on a
users history. And last but not least, the most ridiculous of them all,
a patent on encouraging their users to write reviews about products.
WHAT! They got a patent on online reviews!?!?! The gall they have! User
reviews have been around since the beginning of the Internet. Do they
plan on going around and slapping everyone with user reviews a suit from
their legal department? It is appalling to think that they will spend
the effort and money to apply and follow through with such ridiculous
patents. Come on, you are just a Web peddler of crap that other people
made. Get real.

A dynamo hand crank power on the hinge allows for people to charge it manually in remote places where power is not available. All this for a hundred bucks. amazing. This site lets you type in anything and have it automatically convert it to a jpg with the text rendered in a small selection of fonts and sizes. I can see some nice uses for this. Much easier and faster than opening up Photoshop and saving out an image.
